Federal Tax Extension for the Tuition and Fees Deduction – 02/22/2018

On February 9, 2018, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 was signed into law by President Trump.  The new law extends the expired Tuition and Fees Deduction for tax year 2017.

The Illinois Department of Revenue does not specifically provide for this deduction on Form IL-1040, Individual Income Tax Return.  However, the adjusted gross income (AGI) reported on your return may be impacted by this extension.
We have updated the 2017 Schedule NR and the 2017 Schedule CR to reflect these changes.

We encourage you to file your return online using MyTax Illinois, our free online account management program.  If you are filing using tax software, please make sure you are using the most up-to-date version.  Software companies may take a few weeks to make these changes.

If you have already filed your 2017 Form IL-1040 and you will adjust your federal return to claim the Tuition and Fees Deduction, then you will need to file a 2017 IL-1040-X, Amended Individual Income Tax Return
